Dear Parents, we have had an excellent start to the year. Our new Nursery and Reception children have
now all begun and are quickly settling into life at Saint Michael’s. It has been a joy to see a new
generation of pupils begin their school journey with such innocence, enthusiasm and curiosity. I can only
hope our new pupils grow up to be as wonderful as the Year 5 group that I spent most of this week with
at our residential trip to PGL. They were fantastic! It was amazing to see so many of them achieving goals
they would never have thought possible, from abseiling to jumping from a wobbly telegraph pole onto a
trapeze! For some of the children, the biggest achievement was spending two nights away from home
for the first time. Each of them enjoyed the experience and each of them gained a little more
independence, resilience and maturity. Thank you to all the staff that gave up their own time to look
after the children and apologies to the Year 5 parents for the muddy bag of clothes that have been
returned to you!!
In less uplifting news, I am sure you were as shocked to hear of the local arrests in relation to the recent
terrorist incident at Parsons Green. We have not spoken directly to the children about this and, to the
best of my knowledge, we have not had any children reporting that they are worried or upset. If it
provides any reassurance, the police have assured Surrey schools that there is no increased risk to the
safety of students and staff following this incident. Surrey Police have further information and advice
here and the NSPCC have some excellent advice here for parents in supporting children worried about
Thanks to those of you that attended the PTA meeting earlier this week. We always welcome new faces
and new ideas and there are some new initiatives on the way that will help raise further funds. For more
information, please see the minutes that were parentmailed yesterday.
Please don’t forget that the children will have their school photographs taken next Wednesday. If you
have siblings, they will have a photograph together. If you would also like individual photographs, please
make this clear on the form received.
Next Friday, we will be celebrating the feast of Saint Michael with mass at the school at 10.45am.
Parents are very welcome to join us. Looking further ahead, please make a note of the date and times
for the Curriculum evening on Tuesday, 10th October. This year, we will focus on updating you on the
various school initiatives that you may have heard being mentioned by the children but maybe not fully
explained. You may have asked yourself—What on earth is a ‘chilli challenge’? Do I have a growth
mindset?, Is ‘getting a dojo’ a good thing? Is Numicon some kind of international maths conference? All
will be revealed! Mr Lane
